Care Guide: How to Care for Your Nubuck Boots

Want to know how to best care for your Nubuck boots in order to prolong their lifespan and maintain the “new boots”-appearance for as long as possible? By following the steps in the below guide, you will ensure the longevity of your Nubuck boots from STUTTERHEIM.

Nubuck leather looks similar to suede, but is in fact, unlike suede, made from the outside of the animal hide – just like regular leather. The difference with Nubuck is that the top layer of the skin is removed and the material is brushed to give it its suede-like, velvety finish. This means that Nubuck is somewhere between leather and suede when it comes to durability and water resistance. However, the right care is necessary for the Nubuck to keep its water-repellent qualities and matte-finish look.

Step One: Cleaning Your Nubuck Boots

If your Nubuck boots have laces, remove these to clean separately. If the boots are very muddy, start the cleaning process by banging the boots together, which will allow any dried mud or dirt that clings to the surface to fall off. Next, use a damp cloth to rub away the remaining dirt on the boots. You can also use a Nubuck cleaner, in the form of a spray or balm at this stage if you feel it’s necessary. Make sure to use a product specifically for Nubuck leather, as using balm or wax for regular leather will smooth out the surface and make it glossy instead of matte.

Step Two: Brushing the Fabric With a Nubuck Brush

Once cleaned and thoroughly dried, it’s time to give your Nubuck boots a good grooming, just like you might a faithful stallion at the end of a long ride. Make sure to use a Nubuck brush, not a suede brush, as the bristles differ and a suede brush might be too harsh on the Nubuck fabric. Nubuck brushes usually have short bristles made out of rubber. Brush the boots using circular motions and light to moderate pressure.

Step Three: Treating the Boots with Waterproofing Spray

Lastly, the Nubuck boots need to be impregnated with a waterproofing spray to retain their water resistance. Again, make sure you use an agent that is specifically for Nubuck leather. Apply the spray in an even layer all over the boots. Let dry and finally, re-attach the laces to lace-up boots and you’re done! Easy-peasy.
